NEP-2020 Introduction - How to Implement

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020) outlines a new structure for school education in India, consisting of four stages. These stages are designed to provide a strong foundation of knowledge and skills, promote holistic development, and ensure a seamless transition from one stage to another. The four stages of school education as per NEP-2020 are:

  1. Foundational Stage (Age 3-8): The foundational stage focuses on early childhood care and education (ECCE) and includes children between the ages of 3 and 8 years. This stage aims to provide a stimulating and play-based learning environment that nurtures cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. The emphasis is on experiential learning, language development, pre-literacy, pre-numeracy skills, and the overall well-being of children.

  2. Preparatory Stage (Grade 3-5): The preparatory stage spans Grades 3 to 5 and builds upon the foundational stage.   3. Middle Stage (Grade 6-8): The middle stage comprises Grades 6 to 8 and aims to provide a comprehensive and holistic education. It focuses on deepening subject knowledge, enhancing critical thinking, analytical skills, and creativity. At this stage, students have the opportunity to explore various subjects, including languages, mathematics, science, social sciences, arts, and vocational education.

  4. Secondary Stage (Grade 9-12): The secondary stage encompasses Grades 9 to 12 and prepares students for higher education, career choices, and life beyond school. It provides a broad and flexible curriculum that allows students to choose subjects based on their interests and aspirations. The curriculum encourages multidisciplinary studies, skill development, and experiential learning. It also offers opportunities for vocational education and internships to foster real-world application of knowledge and skills.
